What is Nitrogen & Why do you need it in your Tires?

Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas used to inflate airplane tires, off-road truck tires, military vehicle tires, and race car tires for improved performance, more tire mileage and better fuel economy.

Oxygen in compressed air permeates through the wall of the tire, thus reducing the tire’s inflation pressure. During it’s journey through the tire wall, oxygen oxidizes the rubber compounds in the tire, causing under-inflation and deterioration of the rubber . Dry nitrogen will maintain proper inflation pressure and will prevent auto-ignition, will not corrode rims, extends valve core life, and will help the tire to run cooler.

Experts in the tire industry indicate that oxidative aging is one of the primary causes of decreased tire life. Oxidative aging is caused by the diffusion of oxygen from the pressurized air cavity of the tire to the outside atmosphere. Tests have shown that if tires are inflated with nitrogen, there is a significant reduction in tire failure.

While both nitrogen and oxygen can permeate rubber, nitrogen does it much more slowly. It might take 6 months to lose 2 psi with nitrogen, compared to just a month with air. And nitrogen is far less reactive. It doesn’t cause rust or corrosion on steel or aluminum, and it doesn’t degrade rubber. Wheel surfaces stay smooth and clean, rubber remains supple and resilient.

Why We Ride Movie

A few months ago I was fortunate enough to see a sneak peek screening of a movie called WHY WE RIDE while at the AIM Expo in Florida. The film is an homage to motorcycles and the people who love them. I must say as a motorcycle rider this movie did not disappoint! The film is beautifully shot and the story progresses smoothly and effortlessly from the beginning of the invention of motorcycles, to the passion inside all of us who ride today. To say this film is a tear jerker isn’t over exaggerating. Myself and several others  who left the theater were watery eyed and overcome with a sense of comradely.

When I returned to Team Powersports I spoke with the owner Will Stephenson about the film and we both agreed we had to bring this film to Raleigh for our customers! And so began our journey of months of talking with the producers, Honda Motorsports, & movie theaters. Finally in December we got an early Christmas gift and it all came together and this Sunday at 6:00 pm. Team Powersports & Honda are presenting the first showing of the Why We Ride Film in Raleigh. I knew the biker community would get behind this event, but to sell-out 270 seats was a pretty awesome accomplishment. Thank you to the Raleigh Grande Theater for being so amazing about showing an independent film and embracing the motorcycle community (2 other theaters turned us down). Thank you to Honda for investing in us and the idea of doing this event. But most of all thank you to all of you who are attending the event and who helped us spread the word. You guys are the best and we look forward to hanging with all of you Sunday night!

Mom and Dad does it seem like the Playstation, Xbox, iPad, and Smartphone run your kids lives? I heard a statistic on the news this week that said most children now at the age of 2 has played with an ipad and for the most part knows how to use it…at 2yrs old I was outside playing in the mud and climbing trees. Now obviously, some advances are good and needed, but what about family time? What happened to going outside, having fun & getting dirty while doing it!?
